Top Tips to Maintain Venous Function during Long Flights!

Top Tips to Maintain Venous Function during Long Flights!

by Vein Clinic / Tuesday, 18 February 2020 / Published in Vein Doctors Group

Help minimise venous damage and avoid the development of deep vein thrombosis by maintaining good circulation when flying

1) Compression stockings

The lightweight compression stockings we offer at Vein Doctors Group are a great way to maintain your vein function during long flights. Support stockings apply external pressure to the leg and are designed to assist the return of blood flow upwards to the heart. These stockings are designed to give the greatest support at the ankle, and gradually decrease in pressure all the way up to the thigh.

2) Lower body exercises

By doing some simple leg exercises whilst you are in your chair you can help push the blood along back to your heart. Key exercises include:

  • Ankle flexes
  • Calf raises
  • Leg extensions

3) Maintain a healthy weight

Obesity is one of the major contributing factors to venous dysfunction and so maintaining a healthy weight by eating a healthy diet and participating in regular exercise can help reduce the risk of DVT and the development of varicose veins.
