Modern medicine has given us more treatment options when it comes to varicose veins than the traditional surgical removal.
For a long time there was only one way to get rid of varicose veins and that was to surgically remove them (also called “stripping”). Unfortunately, the results were often unsatisfactory because of complications related to the surgery – this is in fact a major surgery; the long time off work, particularly if you do manual labour; and the scars that are the inevitable consequence of this approach. But not even those problems were the biggest issue; for most patients, the biggest issue was the appearance of new veins where the old veins had been.
WHY DO NEW VEINS OCCUR IN THE SAME PLACE?
Around 20 years ago, the reason for this was made clear – it was the result of new veins growing form the stump of the old vein. Essentially, this meant that while the vein was cut out, it was more so pruned with the inevitable consequence of new growth in the same region. This situation made the time right for non-surgical procedures that treated the vein from the “inside” and caused it to shrivel and not stimulate new vein growth.
HOW DO WE TREAT VEINS AT VEIN DOCTORS GROUP?
Stripping is hardly ever done anymore and at Vein Doctors Group, all our treatments and services are tailored specifically to your unique requirements.
Endovenous Laser Ablation This treatment is a great alternative to traditional invasive surgical vein stripping and is used to treat larger veins. Opposed to surgery, this won’t leave you with any scars as it doesn’t involve any incisions and there is no need for bed rest, hospital stays or general anaesthetic.
Sclerotherapy This involves injecting a solution into the affected vein that contains a sclerosis fluid. This causes a reaction within the vein, it becomes hardened and its blood flow is slowly cut off. The vein will start to fade and eventually, it becomes nearly invisible. Our team prefers to use Sclerotherapy in conjunction with ultrasound as blind injections into a vein don’t guarantee the highest standard of care.
Ultrasound guided sclerotherapy Like regular sclerotherapy, this ultrasound guided version also involves a sclerosis injection into the affected veins. The ultrasound guides the injection – both its placement and required number – to ensure maximum results. The ultrasound is also used to determine the success of the treatment and if any additional treatment if required.
